Canada has the highest per capita immigration rate in the world, according to the federal government. This is due to the quality of life enjoyed by most Canadians.

Canadian cities are consistently rated as the best cities in the world in which to live. In 2006, Mercer Human Resource Consulting rated the world's cities and placed 5 Canadian cities in the top 25. Vancouver has been in the top 3 for years, being ranked Number 1 by the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Liveability Ranking in 2005 and 2006. The EIU also consistently ranks Toronto and Calgary very highly (Toronto #5 in 2006). These rankings are based on low crime rates, little threat of instability, education, healthcare, infrastructure and other factors.

Canada has been rated by the United Nations’ Human Development Index as the number one country in the world, 10 times out of 16 between 1980 and 2004.
